After the war the Austin 8 was manufactured in a slightly different way than the pre-war 8s. The main differences were: steering wheel, chrome plated head lights instead of spray painted ones, horizontal air filter instead of vertical air filter, over riders on the bumpers, full back bumper instead of quarter ones, trunk handle, moveable licence plate carrier on the trunk lid, cast steel gear box instead of aluminium one. Only two models were available after the war, the six light four door saloon and the van. The tourer and the four light two door saloon were no longer available.
This Austin 8 'Arthur' is kindly offered into the scheme by our own Clare Brookes. Clare is the proud owner of over 30 classics having used them for her business before retiring. Arthur was acquired by Clare a number of years ago having previously spent part of his life being used as a wedding car hence the unusual colour. In our opinion he looks fantastic in the antique white. What do you think?
Powered by the same 900cc inline 4 engine as seen in the Austin Big 7 but with a higher 6.5:1 compression ratio. This meant that it made around 27HP opposed to the meagre 25HP seen in the 'Big 7'. Paired with a 4 speed with reverse gearbox, 50MPH is theoretically possible although Arthur much prefers lazy bimbles down country roads these days. Then again, wouldn't you at nearly 80 years old!
This car is right hand drive and of a conventional layout. Aside from rod brakes and a centrally mounted semaphore switch, you shouldn't have any issues adapting to driving this vehicle.
